Brewed is new at the shop, and I hadn’t heard of them before receiving two boxes of their beers. It is no fault of them – these guys from Nottingham are already pretty well established and they’ve been popping out fun, original beers, both in terms of design and in style, since 2014… I am simply constantly reminded how much I still have to learn in terms of craft beer, and it is no exaggeration to say that I hear about new exciting breweries every day.
struck me and Jack first was the can design – Tijuana Build a Snowman, a Mexican gose with jalapenos, salty limes and spices, has a Mexican-style design with inspiration from Disney’s Frozen, featuring a hop-faced Elsa… But Memberberries, our berry gose, is straight-up hysterical. It is directly inspired from a recurring South Park character from series 20 of the show, the Memberberries, who are adorable sentient berries whose sole role is remembering things. Star Wars, pop culture, the 90s, and sometimes, in South Park fashion, some controversial and conservative things (“’member when marriage was just between a man and a woman?”).
sour beers, and I am easily influenced by a clever, cool artwork and concept. The berries of our can are remembering a better time before it all kicked off – they can be seen asking “member hugs?”, “member house parties?”, “member moshpits?” And to top it all of, a familiar, blonde, dishevelled figure can be seen in the bushes waving a white flag… Yeah, I ‘member.
opening the can, no pink explosion, just a few gorgeous bubbles indicating a slight carbonation. The smell is what I imagine being hit in the face by a pack of raspberries feels like, and pouring the beer reveals a barely existent light-pink head, as well as the most beautiful deep purple colour. It is much, much pinker in the light, glowing almost like a pink neon... I have to admit – at this point, I was already sold. Tasting it only confirmed what I was expecting. Deep berry flavours, the ones you only get from real fruits, slightly salty and sour and a mouth-watering tartness. The consistency is perfect, in my books anyway – not watery by any means, but not a puree either. Needless to say my glass didn’t stay full for long.
when I enjoy this kind of beers I get a bit of an impostor syndrome – do I really love beer, or do I just want an Innocent smoothie? But then, I ‘member – there isn’t “a” beer, and every day new weird and exciting things are invented in the beer world. God, yeah, I do love beer.
